We're Throwing a 2-Day-Long Cinco de Mayo Celebration!

It's nearly time for one of our favorite holidays, but since it falls on a Sunday this year, Mexicali Blues is going to celebrate all weekend long! Not only will we be throwing the best Cinco de Mayo party at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we'll also be starting early on Saturday and making it a 2-day celebration! (So we guess that technically Saturday is "Quatro de Mayo."😉)

Fiestas Saturday AND Sunday
Yes, you read that correctly. Even though we are normally closed on Sundays, this holiday is a very special event worth opening our doors for. After all, we can't expect you to celebrate correctly unless you can enjoy the best Mexican food at the Lake of the Ozarks for the holiday!

First up, on Saturday, May 4, we're planning some incredible drink and food specials for dinner beginning at 5:00 pm. In addition to that, we'll be partying on the patio with live entertainment from London Strangers from 5-9 pm. These talented fellas are a professional duo covering today's hits as well as your favorites from the past. An awesome pre-party to get you ready for the actual holiday on Sunday.

Then, for Cinco de Mayo 2019, we'll be treating you to amazing drink and food specials all day long, from the time we open at 11:30 am until we close for the evening. In addition to all of that deliciousness, the London Strangers will be back once again to rock our patio, this time from 4-7 pm.

Did You Know...

Man people assume that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, but that is not true. (That is celebrated on September 16) It's actually the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, which was an important event that gave Mexican citizens a sense of unity and the hope and inspiration needed to keep fighting their war.

Here are a few other fun facts about this great holiday that we think you will find interesting.
  • It's NOT a federal holiday in Mexico! In reality, it's a relatively minor holiday outside of Puebla and the United States.
  • Instead, it's a state holiday celebrated with parades, festivals, and reenactments of the Battle of Puebla.
  • In 1862, Mexican President Benito Juarez made a decree that the city of Puebla be changed to Puebla de Zaragoza to honor General Ignacio Zaragoza, the leader of the troops that defeated the French on Cinco de Mayo.
  • The holiday gained popularity with U.S. citizens after President Franklin Roosevelt enacted the "Good Neighbor Policy" in 1933 to improve relations with Latin American countries.
  • President Abraham Lincoln sympathized with Mexico during their war with France but was unable to lend support to our neighboring country until after our own Civil War was over.
  • The city of Los Angeles throws the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration on record. Denver, New York, Phoenix, and Houston throw pretty impressive parties too, but Mexicali Blues in Osage Beach is ready to give them all a run for their money!
  • According to the California Avocado Commission, about 81 million pounds of avocados are consumed by Americans on Cinco de Mayo every year! Now that's a LOT of guacamole. (We'll be sure to make extra!)
  • Chihuahua races take place in Chandler, AZ every Cinco de Mayo and 2 dogs are crowned king and queen.

So for all of you that were afraid your favorite Mexican restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks would be closed on Cinco de Mayo this year because it falls on a Sunday, fear no more! Instead, Mexicali Blues is throwing a 2-day celebration all weekend long, and we hope to see you both days. It's going to be muy bien!
