Healthy Choices From the Menu at Mexicali Blues
Many people today are trying to watch what they eat, either to lose weight or just because they want to make healthier dining choices. It can be difficult to stick to a healthy eating plan while dining out. Our Lake of the Ozarks Mexican restaurant has a few tips for you today about some of the menu items that can help you do this.
You will find plenty of delicious dishes at Mexicali Blues in Osage Beach that are a smart choice. When you get a little pickier about your ordering habits and substitute what you regularly ordered before with lighter items, you can stick to your plan and save the richer foods for your cheat day or a special treat. Here are a few Mexican food menu items that are a good choice when it comes to healthy eating.
Salsa is a good source of vitamin C, it's fat-free, low-calorie, and an excellent source of lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Go easy on the chips you dip into salsa because those are fried and not low-calorie, but you can have as much salsa as you like. It is a great way to add flavor to your dinner in place of other less healthy condiments.
They do come with cheese on top, but you can always ask for that to be light or left off. Mexicali Blues offers a delicious Seafood Enchilada containing shrimp and crab. It is covered in our savory white cream cheese sauce, but you can ask for us to go light on the sauce or substitute enchilada sauce for a lighter version.
SALSA
The house-recipe salsa served at Mexicali Blues (in Original, Salsa Verde, and "XXX" Hot) is always made with natural ingredients with no preservatives. Those always fresh, never processed ingredients we use are much better for you than many store-bought versions. (Our salsa is available by the jar too so you can even take some home!)Salsa is a good source of vitamin C, it's fat-free, low-calorie, and an excellent source of lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. ENCHILADAS
Enchiladas are sometimes referred to as "Mexican comfort food." They are made with corn tortillas, which are healthier than flour tortillas, and they are not fried. The enchilada sauce it is covered in contains some of the same health benefits of salsa, and your choice of meat inside makes a big difference. They do come with cheese on top, but you can always ask for that to be light or left off. Mexicali Blues offers a delicious Seafood Enchilada containing shrimp and crab. TACOS
Everyone loves tacos! They are a small dish that packs big flavor! When you go light on the sour cream and cheese (or skip them altogether) and heavy on the lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa, it will fill you up without the extra calories.
Grilled meats are always a better choice over fried foods. We offer chicken, steak, shrimp, or grouper tacos that are all excellent choices. When it comes to the shell, opt for baked corn tortillas over flour. The unfried corn tortillas have a lot more fiber and less than half the fat of flour tortillas.
BLACK BEANS
Refried beans can be fat-heavy, but black beans are a tasty, low-fat substitute. They are also high in protein and provide plenty of fiber, which are both items that your body needs. Research has even shown that black beans contain more disease-fighting antioxidants than many fruits and vegetables.
FAJITAS
Since you put all of the ingredients together on your own at the table, you have complete control over what goes into each of your fajitas. Go for one of our low-fat meats and pile on the veggies. Ask for corn tortillas in place of the flour ones, or skip them altogether and simply use a fork.
Eating healthy while dining out, and even at home, is all about making smart food choices. You can still enjoy the best Mexican food at the Lake of the Ozarks if you know what to order. The tips above will get you started so that the next time you come into Mexicali Blues, you'll be able to make your way around our menu like a pro!
