Fun Facts About Cinco de Mayo
It's not Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico's Independence Day is September 16, so Cinco de Mayo is actually a celebration of Mexico's victory in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, during the Franco-Mexican war. It was unlikely that Mexico would win, as they were heavily outnumbered by the French. The victory became a source of pride for the country and is the reason it's still celebrated today.
It's not considered a federal holiday. Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico and is actually a relatively minor holiday outside of Puebla and Veracruz. However, in Puebla and Veracruz, Cinco de Mayo is a very important state holiday and is celebrated with parades, festivals and reenactments.
Celebrated with avocados & tequila. According to the California Avocado Commission, Americans consume up to 81 million pounds of avocados on Cinco de Mayo every year. Along with the crazy amount of avocado intake, every year when Cinco de Mayo rolls around, tequila sales double in bars and restaurants. Surprisingly, the United States consumes twice as much tequila as Mexico, where the spirit originates.
The world's largest Cinco de Mayo party is in the U.S. Los Angeles, California, is home to the world's largest celebration. Last year, over 300,000 people attended Festival de Fiesta Broadway. At the Lake of the Ozarks, the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration is thrown right here at Mexicali Blues!
