How to Eat Healthier at Mexicali Blues

People that have decided to watch what they eat, whether to lose weight or for health reasons, sometimes avoid dining out. It can be difficult to stick to your healthy eating plan when you're not sure which dishes are the healthiest options.

You can find plenty of delicious dishes on our Lake of the Ozarks Mexican restaurant menu that are a smart choice. When you get a little pickier about your ordering habits and substitute what you regularly ordered before with lighter items, you can stick to your plan and save the richer foods for your cheat day or a special treat. Here are a few Mexican food menu items that are a good choice when it comes to healthy eating.

SALSA
The house-recipe salsa served at Mexicali Blues (in Original, Salsa Verde, and "XXX" Hot) is always made with natural ingredients with no preservatives. Those always fresh, never processed ingredients we use are much better for you than many store-bought versions. (Our salsa is available by the jar too so you can take it home with you!)

Salsa is a good source of vitamin C, it's fat-free, low-calorie, and an excellent source of lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Go easy on the chips you dip into salsa because those are fried and not low-calorie, but you can have as much salsa as you like. It is a great way to add flavor to your dinner in place of other less healthy sides.

BLACK BEANS
Refried beans can be fat-heavy, but black beans are a tasty, low-fat substitute. They are also high in protein and provide plenty of fiber, which are both things your body needs. Research has even shown that black beans contain more disease-fighting antioxidants than many fruits and vegetables.

TACOS
Everyone loves tacos, and they are a small dish that packs big flavor! When you go light on the sour cream and cheese (or skip them altogether) and heavy on the lettuce, tomatoes, and salsa, it will fill you up without the extra calories. Grilled meats are always a better choice over fried foods. We offer chicken, steak, shrimp, or grouper tacos that are all excellent choices. When it comes to the shell, opt for baked corn tortillas over flour. The unfried corn tortillas have a lot more fiber and less than half the fat of flour tortillas.

ENCHILADAS
Enchiladas are sometimes referred to as "Mexican comfort food." They are made with those healthier corn tortillas and are not fried. The enchilada sauce it is covered in contains some of the same health benefits of salsa, and your choice of meat inside makes a big difference.

They do come with cheese on top, but you can always ask for that to be light or left off. Mexicali Blues offers a delicious Seafood Enchilada containing shrimp and crab. It is covered in our savory white cream cheese sauce, but you can ask for us to go light on the sauce or substitute enchilada sauce for a lighter version.

FAJITAS
Since you put all of the ingredients together on your own at the table, you have complete control over what goes into each of your fajitas. Go for one of our low-fat meats and pile on the veggies. Ask for corn tortillas in place of the flour ones, or skip them altogether and simply use a fork.

FAJITA SHRIMP
This Mexicali Blues menu item can be found on our appetizer menu. Shrimp is always a good food choice. This dish comes with 12 sauteed shrimp over a bed of onions and peppers, without all of those extra sides that are so tempting that come with a full fajita meal.

(UN)SMOTHERED CHICKEN or SHRIMP
Our menu offers healthy chicken or shrimp served over a bed of rice. Regularly it is smothered with our savory white cream cheese sauce, but you can opt to leave that off or ask for it to be served on the side. This dinner also comes with a side of good-for-you black beans and a house salad. A perfect example of making a regular menu item a little lighter with a small change.

Making smart choices when it comes to the way that you order makes a huge difference, and you still get to dine out on the best Mexican food at the Lake of the Ozarks without the added fat and calories. Even if you are on a special diet, the next time that your friends want to go out for dinner, bring them to Mexicali Blues, where you know how to order off the menu like a pro!
