A Deep-Fried Ice-Cold Treat - Fried Ice Cream

The month of July (which will be here after this weekend) happens to be National Ice Cream Month. Mexicali Blues in Osage Beach has a very unique and delicious way for you to celebrate - Fried Ice Cream!

That might sound impossible to you, but our Lake of the Ozarks Mexican restaurant knows exactly how to deep-fry this ice-cold treat so that it's not a gooey, melted mess. Instead, it turns into a taste-tempting dessert that just may become your new favorite way to enjoy ice cream.

How Do We Do It?
One might think that dropping a ball of ice cream into a deep-fryer would result in everything melting away into nothing. On the contrary, if done correctly, it's a scrumptious treat that will impress you and your friends, as well as your taste buds!

We manage this tasty dessert by starting out with an extremely frozen ball of ice cream (the more solid, the better.) The ice cream is then rolled in cornflake crumbs and cinnamon. Since the ball has been frozen at such a cold temperature, it is able to resist the heat for the limited time it is in the fryer, which is just long enough to turn that coating into a crisp shell of sweet goodness.

The final product turns into an irresistible dessert that has a warm, crunchy outside and a frozen, delightful inside! We dress it up with a bit of chocolate syrup and whipped cream on top before bringing it out to your table to enjoy.

The "Origin" of Fried Ice Cream
Even though fried ice cream is commonly known as a Mexican dessert in the United States, there is also a version of it served in Asian cuisine. It became popular in Mexican restaurants after a certain chain made it their "signature dessert" in the early 1980s.

As is often the case, there are conflicting origin stories for the original creation of this unique food. Some say it was introduced at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, where the ice cream sundae was also invented. A year later in 1984, a Philadelphia company got the credit for creating fried ice cream.

Yet another story claims that a Japanese tempura restaurant came up with the dessert. We don't know which, if any of these stories, is the right one. Once you taste our version, it really won't matter. You'll just be glad that someone had the vision to come up with this brilliant idea!

More Tasty Treats
Fried ice cream is just one of the delicious desserts that we serve at Mexicali Blues. Another yummy choice you might make after dinner is a plate full of sopapillas. This is a deep-fried pasty which is most often served with powdered sugar and honey or chocolate syrup and is sometimes coated in cinnamon and sugar. It's also a good choice to enjoy during National Ice Cream Month because, to add to the deliciousness, we can top our sopapillas with a big scoop of ice cream!

Of course, if you prefer to drink your dessert, you might also enjoy finishing your meal with the best margaritas at the Lake of the Ozarks. We offer an extensive margarita menu full of fantastic flavor choices both frozen and on the rocks.

If you've never eaten your ice cream fried, we guarantee, it's definitely worth checking out. It's the perfect way to end your meal at Mexicali Blues. As a matter of fact, come in between meals just to treat yourself to a midday snack of fried ice cream. You deserve it!
