Intriguing Fun Facts About Shrimp
- They're not hard to find.
Shrimp are found widely around the world and are able to live in both freshwater and saltwater.
- They're not all "shrimpy."
Shrimp come in different sizes, from around a half-inch long up to 12 inches or longer. The longest shrimp ever found on record was located in the Indian River near Fort Pierce, Florida and measured in at 18 inches long!
- They're not picky eaters.
Shrimp are omnivores, which means that they eat both plants and animals.
- "Green" shrimp is safe to eat.
While this is true, you need to pay close attention to that wording. "Green" is in quotation marks because it is a term used for raw, uncooked shrimp, so "green" shrimp is safe to cook and eat. If your shrimp is actually the color green, you may want to throw that away!
- They're light and healthy.
Shrimp are low in calories, carbohydrates, and fat while being high in protein and a good source of Vitamin B12. They are also an excellent source of selenium, which is an antioxidant mineral that activates enzymes in a person's body that fight the growth of cancer-causing free radicals.
